Areas of the Montessori Prepared Environment

1

Practical Life
The young child works with "real life" activities such as tying bows, table scrubbing and food preparations which give him the skills to care for himself and his environment. These lessons give the child self confidence and security in his environment. They are the foundation of the classroom and develop concentration, co-ordination and the ability to follow a sequence of steps.

2

Sensorial
These materials isolate an experience with the sense. working with size shape, colour, sound etc. These lessons develop perceptual clarity. They become increasingly difficult as the child's ability to discriminate is sharpened. These materials also develop concentration and hand/eye co-ordination.

3

Language
When ready, a child can learn to read and write as naturally as he learned to speak. The materials in this area give a strong foundation in phonics, building vocabulary, developing hand control and the "art" of handwriting

4

Mathematics
The hands on learning materials give the child a real understanding of the quantity of numbers and maths concepts. The child begins with lessons for learning symbols and quantities of numbers 0 - 10, then moves on to 11 - 19 and beyond 100. Repetitive manipulation of the concrete materials helps the child make a smooth transition to abstraction.

5

Geography
In this area the child learns about the world's land and water through special materials and globes. Puzzle maps, flags stories and pictures teach children about our place in the world and to respect other cultures.

6

Science
How, what and why are the most often used words in a child's vocabulary. Nature provides an unlimited curriculum for answering these questions. Simple activities in scientific classification help to distinguish between living and non-living forms, plant and animal species, vertebrate animals and various parts of plant and animal anatomy.

7

Physical Education and Sport
Body awareness and co-ordination are closely linked to academic learning and children daily engage in a program of physical exercise designed to increase perceptual motor skills. Sports at the appropriate age levels, takes place weekly.

8

Art
Emphasis is placed on art activities that the child can do for himself. Various media are explored in the study of colour, shape and form.

9

Music/Dance/Drama
The children enjoy group singing, rhythm instruments and movement activities. Dance and Drama are a usual part of the daily curriculum. This culminates with a stage production, the proceeds of which support our 2 sponsored children overseas through the Christian Childrens Fund.

10

Value Education
Values education is an important part of Portland House and is taught throughout the school. ie Kindness, politeness, respect, helpfulness, contribution, co-operation, enjoyment of work.
